St.Michael’s Players formed for the express purpose of creating a regular variety show podcast in an old 1940’s radio tradition. Kovacs’ Cafe in the Upper Room at St. Michaels was launched on Mother’s Day 2024. It is the first of a series, that is written and rehearsed, but not yet posted. Our goal is to take it on the road to senior living homes where radios are still remembered!
Ernie Kovacs, who some consider the ‘father of TV comedy,’ began his career on radio after he graduated Trenton Central High. Radio shows in those days were somewhat like “Sesame Street,” built around recurring themes and characters, introducing new songs.
At the “Kovac’s Cafe,” St. Michael himself is one of our characters- a saint whose spirit is stuck in a creaky old building. The theme of “The Upper Room” is a twist on the Last Supper which is seen as a Passover Seder. But there is also a twist on the seder’s own theme of FREEDOM: for the Biblical Exodus is perceived through the lens RECOVERY and a perennial quest to discover one’s inner peace.
